Suggestions to Prevent ATM Robberies

Posted by: Muhammad Ammad Saleem on: March 29, 2009

In the past week I saw two clips of robbries at two ATM’s of Bank Al-Falah at Karachi. Seeing the clips I became very dishearted and sad, got forced in to thinking what kind of a society we are living in. I am attaching the two videos in article so the readers can watch and better understand the situation I am trying to address.

I hope that after seeing the above two clips people will definatly understand the challenge that I am trying to point at. These people (robbers) are openly challenging the security agencies. And no matter if anyone agrees with me or not, but it is the responsibility of every nation to provide security to its citizens.

Now people reading this article will have the question, but what can be done. To be honest I myself do not know whats the best solution butI have a few suggestions and other security measures that can reduce this crime if not completelt eliminate it. The suggestions that I am proposing below have been divided in to two types, which are as follows:

  • What we can do Personally
    • Never go to an ATM alone, specially at night time
    • Take one or two people with you that you trust, like relatives and friends.
    • Ask them to stand outside the ATM while you make the transactions inside.
    • Before going inside the ATM Facility, take a good look around to see any suspicious characters.
    • If you feel any kind of uncertainty avoid using the ATM
    • Avoid using ATM’s after 8 in the night, unless very urgent or important.
    • Always try to use an ATM that is in the hustle bustle of a market place
  • What the Government can do
    • The Government can order banks to provide security outside every ATM.
    • If the security costs too much, then it can be for a limited period of time like from 8 am to 8 pm
    • Make a system using which the user can restrict any further transactions for that day and it cannot be overridden before the day is over
    • Give the right of shoot at sight to the security agencies for such criminals, this step will shake the confidence of such people.
    • As another measure, there can be bullet proof doors that can be locked from the inside of an ATM, so the user may locak them while performing the transaction and can unlock to leave he feels safe and certain.

I personally feel that the Government cannot do much more than this in the above situation. It is primarily up to us to take all possible security measures. But you are free to provide your comments, views and suggestions that may help in this regard. We can help compile a list of ATM’s that can be said safe.  Hope you like the effort. Looking forward to your suggestions and comments. Take good care of yourself and the people around you and may Allah protect us all from such robberies, Aameen.

Very nice article.. but I must say @ point # 3 in the suggestions for govt. that if this policy is imposed, cud be annoying for people who really need to use their own account twice a day for any reason. like in some emergency situation or anything like that.

But the system described will give the user the right to block transactions for the rest of the day. If he feels that he will not need to perform any other ATM transaction on that particular day, only then he should go for the option.

in that case its OK :)

“Never go to an ATM alone..”

Looks like we have to call our friends or relatives before going to ATM.. wah wah

Care to provide your personal information so that I can get to know who is the person showing the interest. By the way, from your IP I have guessed that you are an employee at KAT using the gateway 192.168.0.200. Now please disclose your identity, so that I can approve your comment. Thanks

Don’t understand how this is the Goverment’s responsibility, can you expand on that further?

Well that’s what the law is in place for. Its the constitutional right of every citizen that he and all his belongings be give proper protection. If this is not the case then why do people rush to Government institutions like Police and other security agencies in the face of such events. Hope that answers your question.

I personally feel that in the above two conditions it is the duty of the bank to provide security to their customers…. a guard should monitor all the cameras and if any thing suspicious is going on, he should take the action or press the alarm so that the respective security agency take the action.
Furthermore in the above cases everything is caught on tape so bank has to reimbursed the victim the whole money which is transacted by the ATM, bank has the prove and bank can claim for insurance.

hmmm its really very alarming security situation..although we cant do much even to stop Open US strikes on our civilians…but I guess govt and public both need to be proactive for such

I guess majority of public now days follows the security measures which u hav mentioned. about bank or govt taking any steps:

3 and 5th points are very valid and useful should be implemented
Regarding guards i think i hav seen many aTM now hav guards n duty but not full time( another thing with so many robberies by security guards of banks, how can we trust them now? )

Ammad first of all I appreciate you for such a great article.

Now the solutions you proposed all are valid and all must be implemented, but we are living in horrible society there I can surely say that government will not take any step to reduce this type of incidents. Bullet proof security doors with guard are immediate solution but software solution should also be required to overcome this issue.

I dont know whether it is possible or not
ATM providers should give a facility that if i enter my ATM pin in reverse order it should lock my acocunt but should show msg of no cash available in ATM screen

A very nice suggestion Mr. Iqbal thanks.

Banks in Pakistan already have Fraud prevention systems which can be modified easily for best practise.

One ordinary example is to reject 2nd successful transaction made on same ATM during 24 hours period.

In this way, customer may not save his money completely, but it will be lowered down.

Can any one suggest me where i can go and ask or suggest for the option which i already give in my previous post

Dear Hussain Iqbal, I would appreciate your sugestion but at that moment your life is on stakes and it would be dangerous to enter your PIN in reverse order; and how would you expect from a security guard working on 4000 per month to come and rescue. Need of any centralised athority, that will activate its team as soon as as the incident occur. and their operation should be after the robbers leave the ATM.

FARAZ: It could be very irritating for some consumers if the bank would reject their 2nd succesfull transaction from the same ATM within 24 hrs.

FYI: ATM Pins are stored no where, HSM (Hardware Security Module) a device with some algorithms generates and validates all these pins; and this device is operated in a centralised environment (usually not bank wise)

My suggestion is to let the State Bank outsorce ATM security as a project to any specific vigilance company who would be responsible to dispath the security team right after the incident(though it doesn’t seems to be very practical as these security companies have no support from our law enforcing agencies).

OK. another option just clicked my mind. Banks should provide each ATM consumer a security linked account (This is same as linking more than one account on a single ATM card) and SET it to default with minimum balance say 500 or 1000. In case of emergency user can get the money from it. what say ?

Just to let you guys know, GEO news has just shown one of the two clips on TV.
